Stephenie Updates

Stephenie has updated her website in regards to the rumors about her being sued:

There are a lot of things I should be doing updates on—for example, how awesome and successful the Book Babe event was, and how cool it was to meet all the other authors and hang out with them a little bit, and how much I appreciated all the tremendous support from the fans—but instead of commenting on happy things (which I admit I should have done a week ago; I was waiting for things to slow down for a day, silly me!), I'm commenting on ridiculous internet rumors so that my publicist's day will be just a little bit better.

I am not being sued. No one has contacted me or my publisher to inform either of us that I'm being sued. I never had a roommate named Heidi. There is no professor in the BYU English department named Dr. Peter Benton (though there is a character on ER by that name). And most of all, I began writing Twilight exactly the way I've told people in countless interviews and events for the past six years: I had a cool dream, I wrote it down, writing it down was really fun, so I kept writing until I had a whole book.

The sad thing about this silly situation is that so many legitimate news outlets reported it without doing any research at all to determine if there was any truth to the story. And at least two of these facts are really, really easy to confirm. Particularly, the one about the BYU professor. A simple on-line search can give you that information. Also, a quick call to my publisher would have cleared up the whole lawsuit story. (Kudos to the fansites who did their due diligence and debunked this rumor days ago.)

I guess the moral of the story is that—big surprise—you can't believe everything you read on the internet. Seems like it's April Fool's Day every day on-line. So no worries, the filming of New Moon continues uninterrupted. And, to end this on a bright note, the filming of New Moon continues to be awesome. It's all so beautiful! Chris Weitz is brilliant. Kristen, Rob, and Taylor are beyond words. I have gotten choked up more than once on set due to their amazing performances. I can't wait to see it all put together!

All sorted now people? Now spread the word!

Re: Stephenie Meyer Sued

I didn't want to post this in case it spread more rumors (who knows, some apparently can't read), but you've probably read on The Twilight Lexicon about Stephenie Meyer being sued by an old College friend and that this has halted New Moon filming....

As The Lexicon clears it up, THIS IS FALSE!

Twilight Lexicon has confirmation that this is bogus here: BOGUS

Stephenie Meyer Reflects on Twilight

The Courier-Mail have an interview with Stephenie Meyer herself as the movie DVD is literally about to be released in Australia.
She had this to say about her vamps:

"For me, a vampire was just an embodiment of that person who's in a bad place and who's told, 'You can't be anything more than what you are'.

"And then the vampire says, 'I'm not going to be what I am, I'm going to be what I want to be'. I love that. My life has been pretty easy, but you see people who overcome enormous odds. And this was a fantasy metaphor for that kind of person."
I personally liked that part :)

Twilight too hot for libraries?

Alex Cantatore writes an article for The Turlock Journal called "Banned books, teen sex, and vampires", which as the title implies is about the banning of the Twilight books.

He writes:

"In case you somehow missed hearing about "Twilight" until this column, the operative word in that last sentence was, "vampires." Yes, not since Buffy and her ilk walked the Earth-or at least the creepy confines of the ill-fated WB Network-have vampires been so gosh darned cool.

If you can't see why this book and its three follow-ups-"New Moon," "Eclipse," and "Breaking Dawn,"-became instant best sellers, you've forgotten what high school was like.

The likelihood of a high school crush-and let's be honest, high school crushes are much more aptly described as secret obsessions-developing into a real relationship is almost non-existent. The idea that a normal girl like Bella could end up with the coolest kid in school - Edward - is incredibly empowering for the sort of teenagers that you would find reading books about vampire romance in the first place, rather than out with a case of cheap beer in an orchard.

The even more amazing part about this whirlwind high school romance-and, warning, spoilers are coming for those of you who've yet to finish the saga-is that Bella and Edward don't have sex until they are married in Book 4, "Breaking Dawn." In fact, the couple is surprisingly chaste throughout the series, only kissing for a few seconds at a time before things get too intense and Edward has to step back before he gets carried away and accidentally kills Bella.

And yet, the two don't "get jiggy with it," as Will Smith might say, until they are away on their honeymoon. The entire concept is almost more amazing than the notion of a vampire falling in love with a human in the first place. And, unlike pulp romance rags, the depiction of Edward and Bella's union is entirely off the page, merely hinted at with the two swimming in the ocean and then waking up the next morning in bed surrounded by torn pillows.

According to a story published in the Salt Lake City Tribune, this implied sex scene between married, consenting adults, has led a junior high library in Utah to unofficially ban the book, keeping it off the shelves and unavailable for checkout. That's right, the story of a teen couple that managed to keep chaste for years-and thousands of pages, as Meyer is nothing if not verbose-only to consummate their marriage on their honeymoon, is considered too hot for libraries.

I find it incredible that, in this day and age, any librarian, parent, or even vampire would turn down a story about a relatively healthy relationship. If you want to ban books in the series based on the violence-which can, admittedly, get a little heated with torn-to-bits vampires set afire screaming-then that's another discussion, though I still believe that banning books for any reason is a horrible practice.

Books give us a window into other peoples' lives; they help us to understand things that we otherwise never would. Even Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita," a tale about a pedophile, for all intents and purposes, is ranked among the best literature of all time and belongs on anyone's bookshelf."

You can read the whole article here: The Turlock Journal

I totally agree with this guy. Just cause you don't agree with a book doesn't mean you have the right to stop others from reading it. I mean, we can't all like the same things! And why is Nabokov's Lolita widely available in libraries but books like Breaking Dawn and Harry Potter aren't? I've read Lolita, and let me tell you that it is one disturbing book! He may be a literary genius, but I just can't see past the pedophillia. How can you justify having a book about a pedophile and his disturbing tendencies available in libraries while banning a book about responsible sex and marriage (or fictional magic)? I just don't get some people.

These librarians/parents are dense if they can't see what a wonderful job Stephenie Meyer has done on discussing the implications of sex and young relationships!

Stephenie spotted in Vancouver

The brains behind Twilight herself is in Vancouver. I like, this means the ball is really rolling now. All we need is Taylor, Kristen and the rest of the cast! But we all know they're in Japan - or heading there at least...

Stephenie Meyer on Vogue

Vogue has done a feature story "Dreamcatcher" on Stephenie Meyer herself.

here's a little snippet of the interview:

With a little Internet research, the meadow became the woods outside Forks,
Washington, one of the rainiest (and thus potentially most vampire-friendly)
places in the United States, and the two people became Isabella "Bella" Swan—a
teenage girl who had moved to Forks from Phoenix—and Edward Cullen, vampire. It
took precisely three months of typing, late at night, her husband wondering what
was going on at the computer. She shared pages only with her older sister. "What
if it was completely stupid?" she says now. With her sister's encouragement, she
sent it to an agent, where it landed in a slush pile, where an assistant found
it. It was then sent to Tingley, senior vice president of Little, Brown Books
for Young Readers—Little, Brown was seeing a trend emerging for horror books
featuring young women. After reading it on a plane to California, Tingley was
offering a three-book deal, which terrified Meyer. "I was just totally bowled
over," Tingley says. Meyer had been hoping to pay off her car and ended up with
a $750,000 advance. For her it's a dream come true in terms of youth-reading
interest. "Books are a big entertainment deal for teenagers now—that's the
coolest thing in the world," she says. "What an amazing gift for me that someone
could say, 'I read now.' "
She looks stunning in the photoshoot!

New interview with Stephenie Meyer

Paris Match (a French magazine) have a new interview with Stephenie Meyer, and Twilighters Anonymous have the translated version!

How did you create Edward Cullen’s character?

It’s Edward who forced me to write.
It’s a gift of my subconscious. I had a dream, that I put on paper when I woke
up. Edward was in it. I did not need to invent him, I knew him. It was more
difficult with Bella, the saga’s heroine. It was harder to understand and define
her.

This part confused me a little bit:

Is a continuation possible?

I do not know yet. There are so many ways to explore, the characters can still evolve. I think Bella has a bright future… But I am not working on it at the moment. I need to leave my vampires alone, before starting over. I wrote other stories, I have other ideas. And if I want to see Eward and Bella again , I will go and bother them!

I was under the impression that Breaking Dawn was the end of the Twilight Saga...fullstop...no nothing. Then rereading I thought that this might've been an older interview (pre-breaking dawn)? possible? Here's me not trying to get my hopes up for wanting more Twilight, but at the same time wanting to leave the end as it is - no risk of ruining it...
